The ancient craft of wheelwrighting, once vital to transportation and industry, is at risk of fading into obscurity. Did you know that the Wheelwright Hub is the only operating Wheelwright in New Zealand? As seasoned craftsmen retire without successors, this essential skill, critical to the creation and maintenance of durable carriage wheels, risks disappearing entirely. The loss of this craft not only erases a key piece of our industrial heritage but also deprives us of the expertise needed for preserving historical vehicles and continuing quality craftsmanship. If we don't act to teach and inspire the next generation, we risk losing a vital part of our cultural and practical legacy forever.
By establishing The Wheelwright Heritage Trust, craft preservers Greg & Ali Lang seek to grow awareness and support for dedicated programs to train and mentor emerging craftspeople. The Trust aims to revitalise this time-honoured skill and ensure its transmission to future generations. Through partnering with international experts and heritage organisations, providing learning opportunities and fostering global connections, the Trust is committed to keeping the craft of wheelwrighting alive.
The Wheelwright Heritage Trust aims to be globally recognised as a world leading support institution for the time-honoured wheelwrighting and carriage-building trade. With plans to create strong wheelwrighting alliances, enable academy development, international apprenticeship opportunities and create jobs, as well as support and finance heritage projects. Initially, the Trust will be looking to support The Wheelwright Hub Ltd to evolve as an international hub for wheelwrighting, by establishing a contemporary visitors centre; hosting workshops and demonstrations and sharing knowledge through online exchanges, to deliver the Trust’s vision.
The Trust’s governance is a shared responsibility among seven Trustees, and is further seeking to grow its capabilities by means of expert connections, funding support, strategic partnerships, and large or small donations. This means you too can be part of this exciting journey. By supporting the Wheelwright Heritage Trust, you help safeguard a crucial aspect of our cultural heritage and empower a new wave of craftspeople to continue this vital trade.
